Play Area or Showpiece: Different Types of Grass

Which grass seed is suitable for your garden is determined by various factors: the location and the usage. Is the area in the sun or in constant shade? Should the lawn be a play area for your children or a pure, green ornament? Depending on this, you have the choice between different types of grass:

  • Play & Sports Grass: Particularly robust even when playing soccer and romping around.

  • Shade Grass: Thrives even in shaded areas under trees or on the house wall.

  • Ornamental Grass: Grows very densely and offers beautiful green, but is sensitive.

Regardless of which grass you choose: For the seeds to germinate, the right timing must be chosen. Spring and autumn are ideal, as summer is too dry.

When to Water the Sown Grass Seeds

Before sowing the grass seeds, you should prepare the soil. Apply a phosphorus-rich fertilizer to the soil and water the earth until it is moist to a depth of four to five centimeters. Scatter the seeds on the surface and spread them evenly with a rake. Then, keep the area moist – but not wet – as seeds will not germinate in soil that is too dry. Once the first blades finally emerge from the soil, the grass seeds have taken root. It is also critical to continue supplying enough water, daily except on rainy days. Once the grass grows to about ten centimeters, it can be mowed for the first time. By then, the young plants will have developed deeper roots. To further stimulate root growth, watering should be reduced to once or twice a week.

Buying Grass Seeds or Laying Sod?

While it takes a while with grass seeds, you have a dense lawn immediately after laying considerably more expensive sod. But the sod must also take root before it can be walked on. Grass seeds or sod – sooner or later, moss and weeds will come through both.
