Liquid Fertilizer
For Green Leaves and Fragrant Flowers: Buy Liquid Fertilizer
Soil, air, light, and water – at first glance, it doesn't seem like much that a plant needs to live. But for healthy, vigorous growth and to form leaves, flowers, and fruits, a variety of different nutrients are also required. Liquid fertilizer is the quickest way to supply these to the plants.
Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium: The Main Nutrients in Liquid Fertilizer
Plant fertilizers provide plants with the necessary nutrients they need for strong and healthy growth. Mineral plant fertilizers mainly contain the three primary nutrients nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), which is why they are also known as NPK fertilizers:
Nitrogen (N): The plant needs it for protein formation and thus for growth. Nitrogen is also contained in chlorophyll. Pale leaves can be a sign of a deficiency.
Phosphorus (P): An important factor in photosynthesis. If the plant develops few flowers and fruits, it may be due to a phosphorus deficiency.
Potassium (K): Plants rely on potassium for vigorous growth. In case of a deficiency, which shows up as necrosis of old leaves, they are susceptible to diseases.
In addition to the primary nutrients, liquid fertilizer often contains other nutrients in small amounts such as calcium, magnesium, or sulfur. Besides universal fertilizers, products like orchid fertilizers or herb fertilizers are available, tailored to the nutrient needs of specific plant types.
The Benefits of Liquid Fertilizer
While granular solid fertilizers take a long time to dissolve and penetrate the soil, liquid fertilizer is absorbed much faster. The nutrients go directly into the soil and act there without affecting the pH value of the soil. Especially for ailing plants that need immediate help and for small root systems, liquid plant fertilizer is the best choice. Furthermore, the fertilizer can be spread more easily and over a larger area than granular fertilizer. The liquid fertilizer is simply added to the irrigation water in the prescribed amount for use. Alternatively, the solution can be applied in diluted form using a spray bottle as foliar feeding to supply the leaves directly.
Mistakes in Application
To avoid errors in application, the instructions on the package must be strictly followed during fertilization. It is particularly important to mix the liquid fertilizer with water, as it can damage the plants if undiluted. There is a risk of over-fertilization since the nutrients are immediately available to the plant. In most fertilizers, the cap of the package serves as a measuring tool. Fertilization should only be done during the growth phase from spring to autumn, with tropical houseplants possibly being an exception. If the liquid fertilizer is applied externally, heat and strong sun should be avoided.
