Info: Perennial. Without chives, a kitchen garden is not complete. They can even be cultivated on the windowsill throughout the winter. "Nelly" is a fine to medium-sized variety that forces well and grows steadily even in winter.
Care: Sow outdoors, about 0.5 cm deep in trays/pots or rows. Chives thrive in any soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot. The robust plants can be cut several times and will keep growing back. Plant spacing 25x30cm. The content is sufficient for 1.5-2 running meters.
Use: The spicy tubes are used almost daily for cooking and for salads, especially for salad marinades, curd, soups, egg dishes, tomatoes, and potato salad.
Gardener's Tip: For forcing on the winter windowsill, dig out clumps in October and leave them exposed until the first frost. Then remove the old leaves and divide the clumps, add new soil, and place them in pots. Lukewarm water accelerates the sprouting of fresh green.
