Info: Annual. Perilla, also known as Shiso, is a spice from Asian cuisine, also a decorative foliage and ornamental plant with pretty flowers. Perilla produces large, red, wavy leaves that are highly fragrant. The taste is intense, reminiscent of cumin. Growth height up to 50 cm.

Care: Sowing takes place from March to April in bowls, from May to June in the open field. Spread the seeds thinly and flatly (light germinator) and cover thinly with sifted soil. Transplant from mid-May at a distance of 25x20 cm. Use sowing soil, keep consistently moist.

Use: Perilla is suitable for preparing fish dishes and making herb vinegar. The plant can be used in a similar variety as basil. Always harvest the young, fresh leaves.

Gardening tip: The dark red, nettle-shaped leaves (without stinging nettle hairs) have a decorative effect on borders and in plant pots.

Sowing: Pre-cultivation: March - April; Open field: May - June

Germination: 10 - 20 days at 18 - 22°C

Location: Sunny

Harvest: From June
